Lip Fillers for Thin Lips
Although some people have naturally thin lips, a person who used to have full lips may find that they become very thin over time as lips are particularly sensitive to the ageing process. They lose volume and become thinner. Rest assured, however, several solutions exist to remedy this.
Thin lips: what causes them?
Some lips are thin at birth, while others become thin with age. We notice a progressive disappearance of the Cupid’s bow, which, in the end, merges with the lip itself. Each of us has a particular shape of lips. Some people have naturally thin lips. Others will notice their lips becoming more refined over time. Why? Here are the most common reasons.
-
The natural aging process
As we age, skin cells renewal is slower, which is most noticeable on the face. With the decrease in collagen and elastin production, the skin simultaneously loses its tone and volume. Cellular renewal decreases; we then notice a progressive deflation of the lips and a variation of their color, which becomes duller.
-
Tobacco use
Smoking is harmful to your health, and the whole body is impacted. This consumption reduces collagen production, to which the skin owes its tone. The skin then starts to dry out gradually around the lips.
The presence of nicotine in the blood also obstructs the blood vessels that have difficulty allowing the passage of vitamins A and C, which are essential for the renewal of skin cells. We then notice an acceleration of the volume loss in the face and, therefore, in the lips.
-
Sun exposure
The sun is a catalyst for the natural aging process. This is why sun care products are strongly recommended for skin and lips. In addition to a simple moisturizing balm, a formula including sunscreen is preferred.
How to prevent this?
If you are concerned about having thin lips in the future, you can prevent them now by adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
- Remember always to keep yourself hydrated. If lips become thin, it’s partly because they dry out. To avoid this, drink at least 1.5 litres of water every day and supplement this with water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon.
- In addition, moisturizing your lips will keep them in good condition regardless of the season. Sun protection is essential to prevent discoloration and loss of lip volume. Solutions against UV are available on the market. This works very well if you use it regularly.
How to treat thin lips?
Sometimes, precautions are not enough to avoid the thinning of the lips. An anesthetic procedure is therefore recommended to plump and redefine the lips. For this purpose, there are lip fillers that contain hyaluronic acid. These are mainly volumizing injections that will have to be repeated once or twice a year to restore volume to the lips.
Hyaluronic acid injections, also called lip fillers, are a non-invasive solution, which gives a pleasant and immediate effect. Dr. Bernier performs this procedure for those who want a plumping and if necessary a volumizing effect.
How long do lip fillers injections effects last?
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid injections provides fuller lips for 6 to 15 months. Depending on the result of the first injection, another one may be recommended to preserve the results for as many months as possible. As a rule, larger volumes injected last longer.
Are lip fillers injections for thin lips painful?
Lip filling is painless. Dr. Bernier uses very fine needles for optimal results, minimizing discomfort. Injections are done without anesthesia or anti-inflammatory drugs, which are not recommended because they can mask the early signs of complications.
However, a topical analgesic cream such as Enela can be used without inconvenience.
After the procedure, the lips may appear swollen for the first three days.
Any side effects?
Hyaluronic acid injections have very few side effects as long as it is performed by a professional. That said, Dr. Bernier will consult with you to see if this treatment is right for you based on your medical history or other parameters.
What about Botox?
Neuromodulators used on the lips reduce the vertical wrinkles located on the white lips. They are due to the strength of the oral sphincter, which makes the skin wrinkle in that direction. By weakening the strength of this muscle, wrinkles formation is reduced, and the thickness (width) of the lip is improved.
